One of the most heart-wrenching stories you could read in life, A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a poignant tale of two women, Mariam and Laila, who are living in Afghanistan from the early 1970s to 2003. The engrossing tale captures both the beauty and horrors of life. Through the eyes of Mariam, we see a life riddled with sadness, heartbreak, abandonment, and abuse. Laila shows us the innocence of childhood, our view of the world filled with colour, rainbows, and smiles. Slowly as she grows older, this colour starts to fade away. She begins to understand the darker elements of human life. At one point, the entire palette is nothing but a blatant black.
Zero hope! Zero light! The ‘Plot armour’ characteristic is an illusion!
The two protagonists have to strive through hardships you and I couldn’t imagine in a hundred years. Touching on evils like societal pressure, narrow-minded thinking, and extreme misogyny, for the first 75% of the book, you can do nothing but cry for both of them. ‘Heavy’ is an understatement for the narrative. Our emotions are completely mangled and toyed with throughout this story. One moment you think that things will get better for the duo, then your hopes are absolutely obliterated. Unpredictable and scary. As a living human, what scares me the most is the fact that the situations Mariam and Laila have to deal with is a reality. Somewhere out there, there are millions of Mariams and Lailas, facing unimaginable, inhumane horrors. You feel actual fear. The shuddering fact that this is not something in the past, but is still reflected now, in present times.

As a reader, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for my life. It also angers me how many people are insensitive to the acts of horror happening around the world. If you feel like your life is the worst, this book will make you realize what an idiot you have been. It also indulges the idea of hope. We think that there will be no ray of light in Mariam and Laila’s path. And for most of the time, that is true. However, the ending ties up the tale of the two in a wonderful, nostalgic manner. Not only does it explain the events of Afghanistan through two innocent lives, but it also gives an account of a life of womanhood and femininity, especially from Laila, who grows from a child to a hardened woman in this story. It shows memories of happiness and sadness. It portrays human emotion felt by the two, in a vivid manner. We feel as if we are also living with them, observing them at every step. We cry with them during times of struggle and rejoice during times of exuberance.
I have read many thrillers, fantasies, and autobiographies. None of them have impacted me emotionally as deeply as this novel. In the end, the book has a central theme which can be best explained by a verse from Kanye West’s song, ‘Praise God’ – “Even if you are not ready for the day, it cannot always be night.”
