One of the best-written pieces in the Robert Langdon universe, “Origin” is a heart-stopping thriller that keeps the readers hooked throughout the story. Starting as a normal murder mystery, we slowly spiral downwards, deeper into the rabbit hole of Science, Religion, and Philosophy. Not only does this celebrate some of the finest pieces of Architecture in the world, but also the genius of the plethora of artists, poets, and literary maestros from the previous centuries. It explains various aspects of history and Computer Science in a lucid, enthralling manner that would otherwise seem mundane and bland in a school textbook. Not only does the narrative acknowledge the works of some of the greatest artistic minds such as William Blake, Van Gogh, etc, but also highlights the importance of immense creativity required in the fields of art and architecture via Antoni Gaudi. With vivid descriptions of important sites in Madrid, Bilbao, and Barcelona, you are completely immersed in the story and you feel like you have been transported there.
It is only through Dan Brown, that we truly learn to enjoy artistry itself and the myriad of nuances and messages embedded deep within them. This book also provides an interesting perspective on the millennia-long war fought between science and religion. Robert takes us through these murky waters, bringing light to multiple misconceptions between the two sides. It helps us understand the enrichment the two sides bring, making us realize that they are not polar opposites, but intertwined. We realize the importance of both. Science helps us understand the world. Religion helps us understand ourselves. Neither can function without the other, for the absence of either would lead to the emergence of corresponding chaos. The story is far from monotonous. It branches into multiple subplots that complement each other wonderfully. We understand the characters more emotionally, without forgetting the main narrative. The title is absolutely fitting. The book provides an interesting take on the two most fundamental questions of life. Where did we come from? Where are we going?
Edmond Kirsch gives a mind-bending theory, creating a brilliant bridge between science and religion. Towards the end, this theory makes enough logical sense to the point where we forget that this is science fiction. The fiction has been smartly concealed by realism, which only proves why this book is so special. The intricate plots and subplots are excellently told with a shocking twist at the end. A must-read!
