Ruchi Joshi is a writer and filmmaker. She grew up in the beautiful city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. At a very young age, she developed a deep passion for writing and cinema. Ruchi describes this passion emphatically, “The written words have always been my best form of expression. I have also been enamored with films from a young age perhaps due to my early exposure to the cinema thanks to my family of writers and media persons. The two: writing and my love for films, came together naturally for me in screenwriting.”
Growing up Ruchi discovered the magical world of cinema starting from Bollywood and Hollywood to World Cinema. She became a huge fan of Kubrick, Truffaut, De Sica, Scorsese, and Kieslowski to name a few, and aspired to make films as magical as theirs. As Ruchi describes her cinematic journey, “I love to tell stories that reveal something new about the human condition. Each of my characters, stories and worlds are starkly different from the others but always reveal something new about the inner scape. After having written a few films, I have realized that the world I create on paper is often inspired by reality but accommodates within it, a twist of magic.”
After completing her BA in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College in Ahmedabad, Ruchi pursued filmmaking. She completed her Diploma in Media and Communication from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, and then did Masters in Cinema Studies from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Her thesis was a feature film screenplay and that gave her the confidence to pursue screenwriting as a profession. Ruchi came down to Mumbai and assisted renowned filmmakers like Navdeep Singh and Bharat Bala on feature films and ad films and having garnered some valuable experience, she started writing. One of her first feature film screenplays titled ‘All about Her’ was selected for NFDC Screenwriter’s Lab conducted in Bosnia, Sarajevo, and Herzegovina, and Film Bazaar, Goa. Ruchi was mentored by greats like Urmi Juvekar and Martin Roberts who were both nurturing and hard taskmasters at the same time. Ruchi’s cinematic treatment and method are unique, inclusive, and progressive. As she describes her methodology, “When it comes to translating a script to the screen, I focus on telling the story both visually and cinematically. I pay close attention to framing, lensing, camera movement, choreography, blocking, art, and colors I believe that every frame should tell the story about the inner workings of the characters, their mood, and the world they live in. To achieve that, I do an extensive shot breakdown and shoot only as much as required. For me directing is exciting when I get a chance to experiment with treatment and style. With ‘Imperfect’ I went the ‘Wes Anderson route’ with symmetry, centre framing, and staged choreography to do justice to the quirky comedy that it was on paper. While with ‘Nishedh Season 2’ I took a completely different route in ‘cinematic naturalism’ whether in terms of performances or visual treatment. But within that, in order to capture the range of characters and spaces, I explored different styles for different characters. Symmetry, centre framing, static camera, and low angles give a sense of order and authoritarianism at the college. Whereas, I created “choreographed chaos” with a family with different opinions living under the same roof, in a house that is small and messy. Camera pans and handheld movements move from one character to the other and catch them in the middle of their lines and actions, sometimes staying with those reacting rather than those talking, to create dynamism, chaos, and unpredictability. The camera became a character observing the chaos unfolding around it. And in the third space, I used a wide-angle lens and a lingering breathing camera to get into the mind of a rather vulnerable character who is dealing with a serious crisis that would change her life forever.”
A short film she wrote and directed titled ‘The Idiot’ (Murakh), a socio-political satire showcased in various Indian and International film festivals including the 39th Cairo International Film Festival, 40th Asian American International Film Festival, New York, 11th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala, Large Short Perfect 10 at MAMI and won many awards and acclaim.
During the pandemic, Ruchi wrote a series for Netflix based on a significant historical event and an investigative thriller for Hotstar. She has directed an original series titled ‘Imperfect’ produced by Times Group and Still and Still Media Production. It is now streaming on Zee5 and MX Player and an original series titled Nishedh Season 2 (2022) produced by Happy Hours Entertainment that is currently streaming on Voot.
Ruchi has written several feature film screenplays and series, some of which have been optioned by producers and studios and she hopes to direct them soon.
