Protecting Women: A Distant Dream

A country where we have been raised since childhood to treat women at par with men. We are said to be blessed as we have taken birth in a country where women are the epitome of godly deities. A country that has been celebrated for its tradition for centuries as we are the people who have recognized the importance of women in a very grand way. The various forms of women either in the form of a mother, sister, wife, and a lot of other forms have been very well accepted by our tradition. I feel quite elated when I ought to read these things but every morning, I feel myself in a heart-rending situation when I have a look at the daily newspaper. How much we will appease our heart with these nice lines which feel good to read but are very far from reality. It is needless to say that even though we talk at length about women’s empowerment, the conditions of women cannot be ignored by us in any case. A country where there is a pool of laws getting enacted each year for the so-called benefit of women but still the security of the women is a mere fantasy.

Rising Crime Against Women

It seems as if the country had evolved since the dawn of the century the genre of crime and atrocity against women have evolved in the same proportion. In a country where marriage is termed as a pious bond, the newly-wed brides are still tortured, murdered, or forced to suicide just for dowry. It is the height of shame for us that even after govt. being changed almost after every five years a number of girls are mortified every day. In a country where the children are called the incarnation of God, there has been a shameful surge in honor killings for satiating our false honor and respect. Even boasting of globalization and liberalization women are murdered in the name of practicing witchcraft. Height to our insensitivity that more than 2000 girls are killed even before they get birth which has resulted in a minimal sex ratio in the last few decades. Even the most heinous crime i.e., rape has increased in the last few years even after the enactment of various laws. Can we ever deserve the right to boast of women’s security when rape cases happen each year and the heinousness of gang rapes are just simply shameful? How can we ever say anything when women and children are led into forced prostitution? A country where still women are called Ghrihalakshmi is tortured as we have seen an unprecedented growth in domestic violence in their own Griha (Home). Even today  cases of acid attacks on women and girls are reported almost every year. The list of atrocities does not end here as even after the so-called promotion of education a fair number of Indian brides are under the age of 18. Even today an alarming number of women and girls are kidnapped each year.

The Concluding Words

The time has come to have a serious action plan for the safety of women as the atrocities on women are far larger than these statistics which go unreported and leave behind some less serious offenses against women. Then only we could dream of a better India and a better society otherwise these self-created fantasies will remain still a distant dream.
