One of the most prestigious awards in the country for translation; Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation got announced on 22nd December where various masterpieces of different languages which got translated into another language were given their due recognition.
A total of books translated into 17 languages were awarded the coveted prize where the noted translator N. Kalyan Raman bagged the Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2022 for the English language for his translation of Perumal Murugan’s Tamil novel Poonachi or The Story of a Black Goat. 
Kalyan Raman is not new to translations as he has been translating Tamil fiction and poetry into English for the last two decades, for which he received the Pudumaipithan Award in 2017. Some of the fiction writers he has made accessible to an Anglophone audience include the late Ashokamitran, Devibharathi, Vaasanthi, Perumal Murugan, and Poomani. His translation of CS Chellappa’s novel Vaadivaasal (Arena) has just been published by Oxford University Press.
The award, in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹50,000 will be presented to N. Kalyan Raman along with the other awardees at a ceremony. The award for the other seven languages including Hindi and Bengali translations will be announced later.
