An Exclusive Interview with Madhuri Banerjee; Bestselling Author & Renowned Columnist

Madhuri Banerjee is the author of 9 books, columnist with the Maxim magazine, Asian Age, Cosmopolitan, has her own blog with CNN-IBN called Chastity Belt as well as her personal blog on Blogspot. She was an Editor with Star Bharat and produced 300 episodes of a daily crime show called Savdhaan India with multiple producers.

Madhuri was an Executive Producer with Hotstar Originals and worked on several original films with Saregama Yoodle Films for the platform. She has written the screenplay for a Bollywood film called Hate Story 2. And worked with stalwarts like Vikram Bhatt, Kaizad Gustad and Subhash Ghai.

She won a National Award for a documentary called “Between Dualities.” Currently Madhuri is developing a web series for an OTT platform under her production house Aria Entertainment House and writing her next book.

In an exclusive interview with Nitish Raj; Editor-in-Chief, The Literary Mirror the bestselling author talks upon the various aspects of writing along with her illustrious literary journey.

Q.1: What inspires you to sketch strong female characters in your books?

MB: Women are strong. They’re all around us – our mothers, friends, sisters, aunts. I just observe all the women and write about them, with a little more exaggeration. I give ordinary women extraordinary circumstances and see how they react. If we do that with any woman in real life, you’ll see how strong they actually are.

Q.2: You have been called Carrie Bradshaw of India by Cosmo magazine. How does it feel to be compared with a highly popular fictional character rather than a living legend or any great personality from the past?

MB: Carrie was an amazing character written by the incredibly talented and popular author Candace Bushnell and created for a blockbuster series by the highly successful Darren Star. So, for anyone to call me Carrie is a huge honour and I’m eternally grateful. Carrie was flawed, beautiful, accomplished and had the best friends. I would be grateful for all that in my life.

Q.3: You have written the screenplay of the highly successful erotic thriller; Hate Story 2. How much it is different from writing the screenplay for a regular crime thriller?

MB: Erotica is just an insert of a scene into a story and adds another dimension to a character’s life. It can be done in books, or scripts to add a layer or a twist. There is no difference in writing, but it needs to be done aesthetically and be appealing instead of cringe worthy. A screenplay is written on two levels- one from the eyes of the director and one from the eyes of the audience. A writer does the balancing act of both worlds.

Q.4: How much it is different to write non-fiction rather than fiction and especially when a very popular Bollywood actress is associated with it?

MB: Non-Fiction is very tough. It requires tons of research, and you need to have all the facts and be accurate. If you’re working with a celebrity, it’s even more demanding as the celeb might not have the time to discuss everything that you need to write which delays the project. However nonfiction is lucrative and if you have a subject you’re interested in writing, I would encourage you to do so.

Q.5: Your books have resilient topics. How far do you think they have helped the readers face society’s general oppressive mentality?

MB: As a writer I genuinely hope that they have. I have no research or insights on this.

Q.6: How much your life as an author has evolved from your debut work; Losing My Virginity And Other Dumb Ideas to your latest work; Life Switch?

MB: I hope that in my books and Life Switch you will find a maturity of voice, deeper observations on people and circumstances, and also the fact that you need to laugh more at the absurd situations life throws at you. It’s been 13 years since the release of my first book Losing My Virginity And Other Dumb Ideas and I’ve learnt a lot about life, women and myself and hope it reflects in my writing. I can only pray the readers see it and appreciate my book.

Q.7: What different person we can find in Madhuri Banerjee when she dons the AD Film Director?

MB: Haha. That was a long time ago. We play many roles in our life, evolve and mature as we age. As a director of ad films and my National Award winning documentary I wore a different hat. Today I’m an author, writer, blogger, columnist, and mentor to young children on writing their books and web series. I love wearing different hats and helping people. That’s my evolution by God’s Grace.
