I love books. Not just reading, but writing them too. I also enjoy bringing people together. Most importantly, I am driven by the idea of making a meaningful contribution so our world can be a better place to live in. These principles have shaped the person I am, and the brand Kunzum that I founded.
I was not always into (creating and selling) books. I started my career in the technology sector, moved to sports management, and then took up journalism and photography. I hold degrees in engineering, management, and journalism. I started writing books in 2007, and have written 11 printed and over 50 electronic books since, with more in the pipeline. Genres include travel, fiction, marketing, and personal development.
The idea of setting up Kunzum as a chain of bookstores came up during the pandemic. Going back to what motivates me to do what I do, I did not want to be just a seller of books. I wanted to make a cultural impact. And that influenced the design of the stores.
For people to immerse themselves in the world of books, the interiors of the stores became vital. We invested significantly in the design: the colors, the navigation, the density of displays, ease of browsing, comfortable seating, and the lighting were all thought out to send the right vibe out.
We then set out to create a sense of community by incubating book clubs for various interest groups and events. In fact, events are the bedrock of everything we do. These are forums where we bring writers and designers face-to-face with their readers. Such interactions lead to creative discussions and promote reading even amongst those who don’t read or are sporadic readers. It also leads to the discovery – of books and stories one may not be familiar with. The cascading effect is already there to see: the more people we touch, the more people they bring into the fold.
We are thus doing our bit to promote literature through Kunzum. Because we believe reading is vital for individual and societal development, leading to happier and more tolerant beings.
