It was the effect of modernity or marketing that sports which were seen as a symbol of being a vagabond turned to be a virtue. Even today we have seen middle-aged people repenting upon their luck as that was a different time. It is needless to elaborate on the various positivity of sports as we are all accustomed to. The changing time has bought something like a renaissance as what once used to be a means of maintaining physical fitness has now been a means to achieve materialistic pleasure.

The New Face Of Sports

Indeed! We have come a long way as a lot of things have changed even in this sports sector. Earlier which used to be just a means of recreation has turned into a means of respect and prestige. The games which used to be just a game is now used to garner a lot of things that have been attached to them. Not only at an individual level but even at an international level it started playing an important role in shaping a country’s political scenario. Who can ever forget the famous Ping Pong diplomacy of China which helped the People’s Republic of China to strengthen relations with the mighty USA? How can we neglect the importance of cricket in enriching the relationship between two arch-rivals India and Pakistan? The various games on the international front like Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games are a clear indication of the rising significance of sports from just being a sport.

Sports Still Concentrated

 Even being a matter of such prime importance, sports have remained concentrated in the major cities barring a few exceptions which are quite heart-rending. It seems a matter of concern whenever we look at the concentration of sports in a particular demography. Even today it is a well-known fact that most of the players are from developed cities or states. Even if we try to dig into this matter we are pacified with the excuses of the lack of infrastructure in these underdeveloped states like Bihar, J&K, and North-Eastern states. Really! Is it just the lack of infrastructure which is hindering the development of sports in these states or is there something else? In the states where we are trying to bring FDI for development can’t we build the required infrastructure? Or are we still considering sports as a matter of elite class which they are voluntarily kept at a bay? In a country where sports have become a religion and the performers have achieved the status of mini-god, a particular section of the country is made aloof. If we are striving hard to bring industrial development in these states then why not a step towards developing sports? If sports are a means of attaining recognition on the international front then are these underdeveloped states have not the right to contribute towards the country’s integrity and dignity? We make a lot of hues and cry when we are not able to bag enough medals in international games then what about the nil number of players from these states? Obviously! No one would doubt the talent and capacity of the players from these states as they have been for sure devoid of the opportunity to prove themselves. Sometimes it seems that they have been devoid of opportunity intentionally out of their diseased aristocratic mentality otherwise a country that can promote education and industrialization can promote sports for sure.
