Long before Souvick Mukherjee found his place in the world of startups, he had already discovered his true calling in the world of words. He began composing poems and short stories at an early age, nurturing his creative instincts alongside his academic and professional journey. His first major literary milestone came in 2013, during his college years, when his short story The Silent Beckons was published in an anthology.
The publication encouraged Souvick to continue writing. Over the years, he focused primarily on poetry and short fiction, sharing his work mostly with family and close friends. It was while revisiting his collection that he began to imagine bringing some of these stories together in a book.
Instead of a conventional full-length novel, Souvick chose to create a collection of short stories. After carefully reviewing his writings, he selected twelve stories that eventually formed The Butcher’s Pets.
The collection takes readers across diverse landscapes of India—from the bustling streets of Old Delhi and the tranquil surroundings of Kolkata’s Prinsep Ghat to the rural villages of Bihar. Each story offers a distinct setting while exploring different shades of human emotions and experiences.
The collection concludes with the title story, The Butcher’s Pets, an intriguing tale that ends with an open question, leaving readers to pause, reflect, and arrive at their own interpretation.
