Who doesn’t like fairy tale romance? who doesn’t like to feel loved? But are we creating unrealistic expectations by reading those stories which showcase unconditional love, should we not understand that these stories are written for us to escape ourselves from the harsh realities of this world?
As a writer, you try to balance both the worlds, fairy tale romance, and reality. When ‘The Last Tear- Reaching to Infinite Love’ was published I was eager to know the response of the readers, will they relate to it, and will they understand my perspective. Finally, responses started accumulating in my DM’s, and bang on! My goal was accomplished when I evinced most of the readers were able to relate to the type of romance written in the book. So, was it a fairy tale? Well, I would say some sort of but with a pinch of reality.
In today’s world, we observe not just teenagers but some adults too getting involved in ‘over-attention by their partners’, ‘excessive PDA’ ‘jealousy’, and guess what! The root cause is insecurity inside them. So, the romance genre shouldn’t be just limited to that aesthetic world that has nothing to do with a human who can be vulnerable, selfish, narcissistic, co-dependent, or too much submissive or distant personality. As we develop different characters our main focus should be what kind of personalities we are choosing for our characters, let’s try to include those personalities who don’t reach towards ‘the idol character’ who is all about falling deep into love and forgetting that there exists a world which includes himself\herself? Love is more than fancy dates and PDA, we all know, and most of us even smirk at those who are engaged in it but subconsciously we too somewhere want to do that sometimes, maybe because we are conditioned or want validation by people. These points should be covered when it comes to writing romance novels, as they say, ‘not by directly writing but showing it through different stories and characters.
I know romance novels are a way towards escapism, but as a writer, it becomes our responsibility too to use our wisdom and spread it through our words.
Let’s give the romance genre a reality check so that any ‘young Simran’ standing on the balcony and looking at the stars doesn’t build an unrealistic expectation of ‘her Raj being perfect’, also doesn’t wait for him to even arrive and become a source of her happiness. Find that happiness inside of you Simran!!!
