Robert stares at the other end. It was concealed in darkness. It was raining. A man steps out of the darkness. Robert is frightened. It was the same man who had killed Hartman. Robert takes out his gun and points to the killer. He was wearing the same outfit he wore during their previous altercation. The man walks and puts his hands up in the air. He slowly walks towards Robert. Robert is scared. He threatens to pull the trigger. The man doesn’t heed the warning. He reaches Robert within arm’s distance. He stops. How could there be someone with the same face? Robert tries to back away from the man. The man starts talking, “No need to be afraid. I’m just you.”. Robert is confused. “Me? How? You can’t be me?”. The man replies, “We both are part of the same body.”. Robert is shocked. “You mean, we are two different personalities, in the same body?”. The man nods. Robert starts to palpitate. “No. It’s not possible. No. You’re trying to trick me. No, I won’t accept this. You are lying to me- Look into the dumpster on your left.”, the man interrupts Robert. Robert stops. He slowly walks towards the dumpster. “Open it,”, the man instructs. Robert opens it. He screams.
The tattooed man had assaulted Robert. His lifeless body was in the dumpster. He had multiple gunshots and stab wounds. Next to him, was a bloodied crowbar. Robert walks away from the dumpster, completely mortified. “The man, it was a dream. It was a goddamn dream!”. The man answers,” No Robert, it was not a dream. You passed out and I took over and- What?!”, Robert cuts in, “What did you DO?!”. The man sighs, “I neutralized the situation.”. Robert, horrified, puts his back onto a wall and slowly sits down, his hands covering his mouth. The man senses the immense fear Robert is experiencing. He walks over to Robert. Robert looks the man in the eyes. “What about Hartman? What about our fight?”. The man shrugs, “We, silenced Hartman. When you found him, I intervened. The fight, was just you, punching yourself. The silencing part was me taking over.”. Robert is terrified. “YOU killed Hartman?!”. The man answers, “No Robert, WE killed Hartman.”. Robert starts crying. “Why the killing? Why?!”. The man kneels next to Robert. “Robert, you know what this outfit is? We wore it, the day…”, the man breathes in, “the day… we lost her. That day, you snapped. I am a manifestation of your rage, your act of vengeance. I do what you could never do, so we both stay at peace. I cross the lines which you could never, for the greater good.”. Robert turns to the man. “Why?”.
The man is annoyed and gets up. He responds angrily, “Because how many times do, we have to rely on the candied authorities, who don’t give do what it takes for peace? Who doesn’t give a damn about safety! Who only do their jobs for a paycheck? How many times do we trust our lives with a corrupted mayor who would do nothing to protect us? Our so-called ‘power’ is our greatest weakness. The justice system kills more people indirectly than criminals do. The criminal’s murder. The system puts them in prison, and the murderers get out on parole, or break out, and commit more murders. How many people indirectly die because of this system? You punish the lawbreakers; they go to prison. I punish the lawbreakers; they go six feet under. You hit them; they get back up. I hit them; they stay DOWN! Redemption is a poisonous illusion. The people who commit a crime, deserve to get punished without mercy. That is the ONLY way people stay safe. That is the only way our society strives toward peace. That is the ONLY way we ever unite as a species. For humanity to fly, we need to cut the ropes. We need to get rid of diseases plaguing the sanctity of humanity. If an infected limb is at risk of destroying the entire body, we severe the limb to save the body. This is why I do what you would never do. So that you and the rest of the people would sleep soundly at night, knowing that you wouldn’t die the next day. Now I couldn’t do this all by myself. I’m just a mere cop with a large vision. I had to have help. It only takes a little bit of convincing broken people like that Mitchell kid to join you in your mission, and my mission is for the betterment of mankind.”.
Robert wipes his tears and stands up. “It is not our duty to decide if people live or die. Everyone deserves a second chance. murder is not the path to humanity’s development,”, saying that, he punches the man, but he ends up hurting himself. The man laughs, “You can’t do anything to me, I’m you!”. Robert replies, “If you’re me, then my pain is your pain.”. Saying this, Robert puts his gun on his head. The man is surprised and pushes Robert, causing Robert to shoot his face.
Robert wakes up on a bed. He looks around. There is no sign of his alter ego. He breathes a sigh of relief. A nurse is present in the room. She is clearing a table next to him. Robert acknowledges the nurse and gets up. He notices the entire room painted with a shining white hue. He asks her, “Is this Heaven or Earth?”. The nurse smiles.
