Dr. Nikita Lalwani is an Indian writer and a self-confessed coffee addict. She is the author of Amazon Bestseller 2 Day Down, Live Life…Stop Analysing It, and 2 Peg ke Baad with renowned Indian publishers. Nikita completed her education in Bachelors of Dental Surgery but soon moved to Mumbai to start her career in advertising. She has worked with world’s leading ad agencies like Ogilvy & McCann and currently helps startups to build successful brands. The SWA recognised writer has also written, directed & co-produced her short film named Coffee with Addways Films. Apart from creating stories, Nikita has been an avid speaker & a podcaster and has shared her story on noted platforms like TEDx IIM Sirmaur, Sophia College, N.L. In an exclusive interview with Nitish Raj; Editor-in-Chief, the acclaimed author talks about her writing journey along with the other aspects of writing.

Q.1: According to you, what are the key ingredients to becoming a successful author?

NL:

  • Love for creating stories
  • Passion for marketing
  • Empathy

Q.2: Your book ‘2 Peg Ke Baad’ carries an Urban Soul. Would you like to tell us more about the book?

NL: 2 peg ke baad started as a blog with an idea to cover stories from every corner of the city. I used to speak to random people in pubs, restaurants, while traveling, etc, and it would surprise me to see people opening up to me so easily. Later, when the book got published, hundreds of people who were associated with it poured in their love. This made me realize 2 things: 1. Power of community 2. Need of being a good listener

And no matter what kind of artist you are, these things can accelerate your growth naturally.

Q.3: ‘A Dentist by destiny and Writer by choice’, how has writing shaped your life?

NL: I think writing chose me. What I do for a living today – Advertising – came to me through writing, and that opened multiple avenues in my life.

Q.4: You wrote ‘Live Life…Stop Analyzing It’ when you were 16. Would you like to tell your readers, how did the book happen?

NL: Honestly, I started writing because I felt lonely in those years. The pressure of academics and lack of true friends made me spend a lot of time on my thoughts. That was also a time when I was struggling through the disturbing teenage that made me write down my thoughts which eventually became a book.

Q.5: Do you think short story collections are underrated in the literary world, especially in India?

NL: YES! I have failed to understand why in an era where we like short-form content on the web, we run away from short stories in books. I love writing and reading short stories and I hope the genre to become more popular amongst readers with time.

Q.6: From where do you draw inspiration for your stories and characters?

NL: There is a part of me in every character; even if it is as little as the way they brush their teeth. Other than that, it’s people you meet and remember from the past that help you shape your characters.

Q.7: What would be your word of advice for budding writers?

NL: If you don’t enjoy writing every single day, no matter where the world is headed, there’s no point in doing it. Take a break once you are done writing your book (Send out the manuscript and forget about it for some time). I mean take a break from everything you are doing. Then get down to the dirty job of marketing because that will take a lot of your heart and soul.
